Globe launches dual phone service to beat competition

Globe Telecom has launched a world innovation that allows unlimited and landline calling in a single phone, which the company hopes will beat its competition in the highly competitive telecom market.

?It is an IT innovation and the first in the world,? said Ernest Cu, president and chief executive of Globe, a publicly listed company jointly controlled by Ayala Corp. and Singapore Telecom.

The new product, branded as Globe Duo, is a 2-in-1 mobile and landline calling service which enables unlimited calls to and from any landline, and between Duo numbers within the same area code.

Subscription to Duo, available to existing postpaid subscribers, is P399 a month of top of a Globe Plan. Subscribers will be given a Duo landline number, aside from the mobile phone number.

Globe hoped that the Duo service along with its new mobile internet browsing add-on plans would improve subscriber retention.

These two add-on plans require initial lock-up periods and have built in automatic expiry reminders and renewal features for convenient reactivation of the service.

Cu also said that Globe would focus on its WiMAX service as its Internet broadband platform. The company has launched the service in Cebu, South Luzon and Cagayan de Oro.

Globe?s commercial roll-out of WiMAX 802.16e is one of the first and largest in Southeast Asia. The service is expected to complement Globe?s existing 3G with HSDPA network in delivering fixed wireless broadband to areas with high Internet traffic and heavy user requirements.
